Nintendo Launches Major ‘Customer Appreciation Sale’ Amid Tariff Refund Controversy
Nintendo is gearing up for a major sale this weekend, offering discounts of up to 30% on games, merchandise, and accessories. This event is made possible by “tariff-related refunds” received from the U.S. government, funds that the company has been reluctant to return to customers and has even contested in court.
On Thursday, Nintendo revealed its upcoming “Customer Appreciation Sale,” set to run from September 13 to September 26. The company describes this as one of its “largest promotions ever,” featuring price cuts on both digital and physical games, bundles, downloadable content, accessories, amiibos, and Nintendo-themed apparel. The sale will be available through the eShop, Nintendo Stores, and select participating retail locations, though specific details on discounted items have yet to be announced.
“The Customer Appreciation Sale is our way of saying thank you to Nintendo players for their continued support and is made possible in part by tariff-related refunds,” the company stated. “While Nintendo absorbed most tariff-related costs, the refunds helped make promotions like this one possible.”
Earlier this year, Nintendo took legal action against the U.S. Treasury Department, Homeland Security, and Customs & Border Protection to reclaim tariff money paid after a Supreme Court ruling deemed President Trump’s tariffs illegal. The company has also been involved in legal disputes with some customers seeking to compel it to return those refunds.
Perhaps Nintendo hopes this significant sale will help mend relations with fans and quell inquiries about refunds. At the very least, it’s refreshing to see the company passing some savings back to players after many had to pay inflated prices for Switch 2 consoles and controllers last year.
“Thank you for being part of the Nintendo community,” concluded the company in its announcement. “We hope you’ll discover your next adventure during the Customer Appreciation Sale!”
