A new early access FPS is climbing to the top of the Steam charts.
Wardogs, the newly launched first-person shooter now available in Steam Early Access, has already crossed the impressive milestone of 1 million copies sold and is climbing the charts of most-played games, as reported by SteamDB. Currently, it boasts over 250,000 active players, placing it as the fourth-most played title on Steam, trailing only behind Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and PUBG: Battlegrounds.
The developer, Bulkhead, shared that Wardogs hit over 1 million wishlists last month. On launch day, this enthusiasm translated into more than 1 million sales. “Wardogs reached 100,000 Steam wishlists just three days after its reveal, surpassed 500,000 in May, and hit one million wishlists in August,” the announcement noted. “Now, as the game enters Early Access today, one million wishlists have turned into over one million copies sold.”
The current player count has already eclipsed the record set during a brief open beta last weekend, which peaked at just over 245,000 players. This surge follows the launch trailer, which revealed plans for the game to come to PlayStation 5 and Xbox in 2028.
Wardogs aims to establish its own identity within the FPS genre. It’s designed to be more hardcore than casual shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield, yet not as punishing or realistic as titles such as Escape From Tarkov or Squad. Matches feature 100 players divided into three teams, battling for control of a gradually shifting zone in a mode called King of the Hill.
“To cross a million copies sold as we launch into early access is mental,” said Joe Brammer, CEO at Bulkhead. “We’ve spent the last few months showing people exactly what Wardogs is, what it isn’t, and at one point literally gave everyone ten reasons not to buy it. We didn’t want people buying into blind hype. So seeing more than one million people choose to jump in and play the game at early access launch means a huge amount to all of us.
“But this is still early access. We’ve got things to fix, things we want to improve, and a lot more we want to build. The best thing players can do now is keep playing, keep telling us what they think, and keep giving us those ridiculous Wardogs moments.”
A promising start for Bulkhead’s new FPS.
