The future of Final Fantasy 7 in Fortnite remains uncertain, but there’s still optimism.
Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, recently discussed Square Enix’s connection with Fortnite in an interview. While he didn’t confirm whether characters from Final Fantasy would join Fortnite’s vast array of skins, fans are still holding onto some hope. He also revealed an interesting tidbit about the inspiration behind the parachuting mechanic in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.
The latest season of Fortnite, Chapter 7 Season 4, revolves around two main themes: video games and hacking. This combination has allowed Epic Games to introduce a variety of new gaming franchises into its Battle Royale. Players can now grab cosmetics inspired by iconic characters like Sonic the Hedgehog, Crash Bandicoot, Mega Man, and Spyro, with more collaborations on the horizon, including confirmed appearances from Sora of Kingdom Hearts and Joker from Persona 5.
In a recent chat, Hamaguchi touched on the Kingdom Hearts crossover with Fortnite. When asked about the possibility of Final Fantasy 7 characters making an appearance, he provided an intriguing response:
“What I can say right now is that, looking back at the history of Final Fantasy 7, fans might notice this, but we haven’t had a lot of very major collaborations with other IPs. This is mostly because we wanted to be selective to protect the brand of Final Fantasy 7. But what I can say now is that we are, you know, considering a lot of, you know, different collaborations at the moment. So, you know, whether Fortnite is included in the list of potential collaboration partners, that’s something for the fans to look forward to.”
This response isn’t a definitive “no,” which leaves fans feeling optimistic about future possibilities. It appears that Square Enix is open to collaborations but is still contemplating how to approach a potential partnership with Fortnite. Hamaguchi also mentioned that if he had to choose a character for Fortnite, it would be Barret, as it would be entertaining to see how his machine-gun arm could be utilized in the Battle Royale.
Before wrapping up the interview, Hamaguchi shared a detail that will excite both Fortnite and Final Fantasy 7 fans. In the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, players will be able to parachute from the Highwind onto the map. This mechanic draws inspiration from Fortnite, where players leap from the Battle Bus and glide down to their chosen spot—an experience that will be mirrored in FF7 Revelation.
