Exploring Valheim’s Protection Idols and the Forge of Potential
If you’re diving into a new character or world in Valheim 1.0 for the first time, you might be curious about the Battle Idols and Protection Idols you’ve stumbled upon. As you explore the various biomes, you’ll occasionally find these wooden, bronze, iron, or other material Idols in chests.
While they might not seem useful right away, hold onto any Idols you collect, as they will eventually play a key role in upgrading your weapons and armor.
You can find Idols as loot in chests scattered throughout the world, which can be located in places like abandoned houses, burial chambers, ruined towers, shipwrecks, Viking graveyards, and other notable spots.
The type of Idol you discover will depend on the biome you’re exploring:
These Idols are essential for enhancing your gear: Battle Idols are for weapon upgrades, while Protection Idols are for armor improvements. You can only use them at the Forge of Potential.
To locate the Forge of Potential, venture into the Mountains biome. It’s quite chilly there, so make sure to bring items that provide warmth, such as frost resistance mead or a wolf fur cape or armor chestpiece to keep from freezing.
As you approach the Forge of Potential, an icon resembling an Idol will pop up on your map:
In my experiences, the Forge has always been near the summoning altar for the boss Moder, but I can’t confirm if that’s a consistent spawn point or just coincidence. Each time, it has been situated close to the peak of a tall mountain.
The Forge acts as a workbench for upgrading your gear, provided you have an Idol and the appropriate gear in your inventory. Each Idol corresponds to gear made from the same material: for instance, a Bronze Protection Idol can upgrade bronze armor, while an Iron Battle Idol can enhance an iron weapon.
When you interact with the Forge, you can select the gear you wish to upgrade if you have an Idol on hand. Just hit the “Attempt Refinement” button to get started.
Keep in mind: the Forge has a chance of failure. If your attempt fails, the gear you were upgrading will be destroyed, but you’ll get back the crafting materials needed to recreate it. However, you can’t use the Forge of Potential to recraft items; it’s strictly for upgrades.
Also, be aware that you’ll take damage if your upgrade fails, so make sure you’re at full health before proceeding!
Is upgrading worth the risk? Here’s an example of a bronze sword I enhanced at the Forge of Potential:
The durability increased by 50 points, slash damage improved from 41 (11-24) to 47 (13-27), and block force rose from 25 to 30, while all other stats remained unchanged.
