PlayStation’s heist shooter makes a comeback with an unexpected playtest and a fresh title.
Three years after its initial announcement, the heist shooter Fairgames (also known as Fairgame$) from PlayStation and Haven Studios appears to be making a comeback, as indicated by a recent playtest listed on Player.gg. This playtest is for “an unannounced competitive action shooter” for PlayStation 5 and Windows PC, codenamed Project Espresso, which closely resembles Fairgames.
According to the playtest description, “Project Espresso is a third-person PvPvE competitive action game where teams compete to infiltrate high-security locations, steal valuable cargo, and escape before their opponents.” This aligns closely with Fairgames, which was described in a 2023 PlayStation Blog post as “a thrilling competitive heist game where you join an underground movement to rob the ultra-rich and rebalance the scales.”
The trailer for Project Espresso also showcases several elements reminiscent of Fairgames, including the design of its gold vault and character appearances. For instance, a character in both trailers sports a white ski mask. Players can sign up for the playtest now by creating an account on Player.gg.
Efforts are underway to confirm the identity of Project Espresso, and updates will follow once more information is available.
Fairgames (or Project Espresso, or whatever the final title may be) marks the debut project from Haven Studios, founded in 2021 by Jade Raymond, a former producer for the Assassin’s Creed series and head of Google Stadia Games and Entertainment. The Montreal-based developer was acquired by Sony in 2022 and unveiled its long-awaited project during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase. Notably, Raymond has since departed from the studio.
“Fairgame$ will give you an opportunity to break the rules as a modern-day Robin Hood, a thrill seeker, or just someone who wants to collect cool loot,” said creative director Mathieu Leduc at the game’s announcement. He further explained that “Fairgame$ came from a desire to create a new type of PvP game with emergent sandbox gameplay.”
Fairgames/Project Espresso is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Windows PC, though a release date has yet to be announced.
