Bethesda is actively developing several Fallout projects, including Fallout 5.
Xbox is eager for more Fallout action, and after a lengthy wait for new titles, Bethesda Softworks is stepping up to deliver. The studio announced plans to remaster both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas for modern consoles, as part of a comprehensive roadmap shared in July detailing their future projects.
These remasters are just a piece of a broader strategy to reinvigorate the Fallout franchise, which includes the development of Fallout 5, currently in pre-production, along with a new project at Obsidian Entertainment.
Bethesda confirmed in an official announcement this summer that they have several Fallout projects in the works. This includes Fallout 5, which is being positioned as the studio’s “long-range destination,” and a significant expansion for Fallout 76 titled Raven Rock, set to release in 2027. This expansion will serve as a prequel to Fallout 3.
The studio also put to rest two long-standing rumors by officially announcing the remasters for Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. While no specific details or release dates were provided, these projects have reportedly been in development for several years. The remaster of Fallout 3 has been on the radar since at least 2020, when it was mentioned in court documents related to the Federal Trade Commission’s litigation concerning Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Additionally, Bethesda revealed that there won’t be a “traditional Fallout Day broadcast” in 2026, but they are planning something special for Fallout’s 30th anniversary in 2027, with a live celebration in Washington, D.C. Fallout Day, which has been observed in 2024 and 2025, falls on October 23, the date marking the Great War in the Fallout universe.
The remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas follow last year’s release of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, co-developed by Virtuos and Bethesda Game Studios. Bethesda also celebrated the 10-year anniversary of Fallout 4 in 2025 with the launch of Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition, which included the base game, all six previously released DLCs, and over 150 items from the Fallout 4 Creation Club.
Fallout 3 debuted in 2008 on PlayStation 3, Windows PC, and Xbox 360, marking the third major entry in the Fallout series and the first developed by Bethesda after acquiring the franchise rights from Interplay Entertainment. Set in and around Washington D.C. 200 years post-nuclear war, players take on the role of a 19-year-old Vault dweller searching for their missing father.
Fallout: New Vegas followed in 2010, developed by Obsidian Entertainment. This installment is set in the Mojave Desert, where players assume the role of a courier caught in a power struggle among various factions vying for control of the area.
