Blizzard Unveils Gruesome Details of Open-World StarCraft Shooter, But a Long Wait Awaits Players

In a surprising turn of events, StarCraft is making a comeback. After a long period of speculation, Blizzard has officially announced that they are developing a brand new open-world shooter set in the StarCraft universe. Simply titled StarCraft, it’s unfortunate to report that players will have to wait until 2030 to get their hands on it.

While today’s reveal didn’t showcase any gameplay or major details, we did get a cinematic glimpse of recruits preparing for battle against the Swarm, complete with an inspiring military speech. The scene follows Holt, a character who faces a weapon malfunction during combat, leading to a grim shot of his damaged suit and the implication of his demise in the heat of battle.

And that’s about all the information we have on StarCraft for now. The last entry in the franchise, StarCraft: Remastered, was released back in 2017, nearly a decade ago. Before that, the last original game was StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty, which launched in the distant year of 2010.

Rumors of a StarCraft shooter have circulated for years, dating back to the canceled Ares project in 2019, and more recently, hints of this open-world shooter emerged from a job listing in 2024, led by former Ubisoft developer and Far Cry 5 director Dan Hay.
