Diablo 5 Unveiled at BlizzCon 2026
It’s official: the next chapter in the Diablo saga is on the way. During the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard Entertainment announced that they are hard at work on Diablo 5, the latest installment in the iconic franchise that has captivated players for nearly 30 years. This time around, the Lord of Terror himself, the original Diablo, is making a comeback, having first haunted players back in 1997.
Blizzard even set a release date for this highly anticipated sequel, revealing that Diablo 5 is slated to launch in spring 2029.
The announcement came with a brief teaser during the BlizzCon ceremony, showcasing a fierce battle where angels are overwhelmed by Diablo’s minions, setting a dark tone for the future of the series.
Set approximately 100 years after the events of Diablo 4, where Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, meets his end, Diablo 5 will immerse players in a drastically altered world. In this new installment, Sanctuary has succumbed to chaos, with Diablo emerging victorious in the eternal struggle between good and evil. Players will navigate a post-apocalyptic landscape, facing the daunting question: what must you become when the world has already crumbled?
More insights into Diablo 5 will be unveiled during the “Diablo 5: Forging the Next Era” panel at BlizzCon on September 12 at 1:45 p.m. PT, promising an early glimpse into the world, character classes, and the creative vision that will shape this next chapter.
Diablo 5 is expected to arrive about six years after Diablo 4’s release—assuming Blizzard adheres to its timeline. Diablo 4 was first revealed at BlizzCon 2019 and launched in June 2023. Since then, Blizzard has rolled out two expansions: Vessel of Hatred in October 2024 and Lord of Hatred in April 2026. Additionally, Blizzard announced a new playable class for Diablo 4, the Amazon, making her return since her debut in Diablo 2.
While Blizzard hasn’t specified platforms for Diablo 5 yet, they developed Diablo 4 for both consoles and PC simultaneously, releasing it across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. They also plan to bring Diablo 4 to the Nintendo Switch 2 in a bundle called Diablo 4: The Age of Hatred Collection, which will include the base game and its expansions.
If Diablo 5 meets its spring 2029 release target, it will mark a surprisingly quick turnaround for Blizzard. The original Diablo launched in January 1997, with its sequel, Diablo 2, following just a few years later in June 2000. However, it took over a decade for Blizzard to deliver Diablo 3 in 2012, and another 11 years before Diablo 4 arrived. While expansions and new classes have filled the gaps between mainline releases, it seems Blizzard is now focused on delivering new entries in the franchise at a faster pace than before.
Blizzard appears poised for a strong year in 2026, but there’s more to the story.
