StarCraft Set to Make a Comeback in 2030 as an Open-World Shooter

Blizzard first attempted to transition the StarCraft universe into the realm of 3D shooters back in 2002 with StarCraft: Ghost. Unfortunately, the project languished in development for years until Blizzard’s president, Mike Morhaime, announced its cancellation in 2014. Now, the studio is reviving the franchise with a new title simply called StarCraft. During BlizzCon, Dan Hay, a VP at Blizzard, revealed that after more than a decade of inactivity, StarCraft is set to return in 2030. However, instead of another top-down real-time strategy game, this new installment will be an open-world shooter.

The reveal included a cinematic trailer showcasing the human United Earth Directorate faction gearing up to battle the Zerg, with the Protoss only briefly mentioned. The trailer makes it clear that this fresh approach to the StarCraft series won’t shy away from intensity. Following a stirring call to arms, the human character we follow for three minutes is ultimately shown to be just another expendable piece in the brutal machinery of war.

While fans are undoubtedly thrilled to see Blizzard reviving this long-dormant series, many are likely still hoping for a true RTS sequel to 2010’s StarCraft II.
