Jason Statham’s 95-minute action thriller finds new life on streaming platforms.

Jason Statham has never been one to chase after roles that stray too far from his established action-hero persona. From films like The Transporter and Crank to The Mechanic, Wrath of Man, and The Beekeeper, he has carved out a niche by portraying tough characters with shadowy pasts, tackling villains head-on with his fists.

Statham is well aware of this pattern. In a 2017 interview, he acknowledged that he prefers to stick to what he excels at rather than venturing into unfamiliar territory. He’s openly stated that he’s “not really some thespian” capable of morphing into any character, emphasizing that his physicality lends a unique authenticity to his action roles.

This approach has resulted in a collection of thrilling classics, alongside a few films that didn’t resonate with audiences upon release. However, one of his more recent projects, which initially struggled at the box office, is now climbing the streaming charts, demonstrating that fans still enjoy Statham’s one-man army narratives, even if they prefer to watch them at home.

Released in theaters in August, Mutiny has surged to the top of both Amazon’s movie chart and the Apple TV Store’s movie chart, according to FlixPatrol. This is quite a turnaround for a film that received a mixed critical reception.

In Mutiny, Statham plays Cole Reed, a former Royal Marine commando turned security for a billionaire. After witnessing his boss’s murder, he finds himself framed for the crime and on the run. His quest for the truth leads him aboard a cargo ship, where he uncovers a larger international conspiracy tied to the murder.

Naturally, being trapped on a ship filled with ex-mercenaries provides Reed with ample chances to showcase Statham’s signature fighting style as he navigates increasingly perilous situations while unraveling the conspiracy.

The critical reception has been lukewarm, with Mutiny currently holding a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have generally praised Statham’s physical performance and the film’s action sequences, but have criticized its convoluted plot and dark tone.

While this isn’t exactly glowing praise, Statham’s films have historically thrived without needing universal acclaim to attract an audience. If the current streaming trends are any indication, Mutiny may have finally found the viewership it was aiming for.
