Fans speculate a major revival for the DC fighting game from Mortal Kombat developers.

Fighting game enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement over the potential return of a beloved series, sparked by a recent job listing for playtesters. As noted by some sources, this playtest invites participants to spend four hours with an “unreleased AAA 2D fighting game.” Given the context, many are speculating that this could be Injustice 3, the next installment in the DC-themed fighting game franchise from NetherRealm Studios.

A company specializing in organizing NDA-protected playtests is currently seeking “top-ranked 2D fighting game players” for an in-person session in Culver City, California, scheduled for September 14-15. They are specifically targeting players who have reached the top 25% in a major 2D fighting game. While this information is somewhat vague, it has led to widespread speculation that the playtest is for a sequel to the Injustice series.

The mention of an “unreleased AAA 2D fighting game” effectively rules out many announced but not yet released titles in the genre. For instance, Virtua Fighter: Crossroads and Dead or Alive 7 are both 3D fighters, and Melty Blood Type Lumina doesn’t fit the AAA category.

This suggests that the game in question has yet to be revealed, and while there are several possibilities, Injustice 3 stands out as the most likely candidate. The playtest’s location in California hints that the game is being developed in the U.S., which narrows the field considerably. NetherRealm Studios, known for Mortal Kombat and the first two Injustice games, is one of the few AAA fighting game developers in the country. The timing also aligns well: NetherRealm’s last release, Mortal Kombat 1, debuted in 2023, and with a four-year gap between Mortal Kombat 11 and MK1, a 2027 release for Injustice 3 would fit that pattern.

As for the rumors circulating, several voice actors have alluded to the existence of Injustice 3, although they later retracted those statements. Additionally, NetherRealm’s creative director, Ed Boon, has been sharing clips from the Injustice series recently, which is intriguing considering the last game in that lineup was released in 2017. A few months back, DC announced a mobile fighting game called DCKO, which many initially thought might be a new Injustice title. Fans are hopeful that news of Injustice 3 will bring some excitement back to the franchise, allowing iconic characters like Batman and Superman to clash once more.
