Sega and Netflix Team Up for a Crazy Taxi Movie Adaptation

Netflix and Sega have teamed up for an exciting multi-title collaboration that will bring Crazy Taxi to the big screen. The film will be penned by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, known for their work on the screenplay for The Naked Gun’s 2025 reboot. Producers from the Sonic franchise, including Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara, are on board to bring this project to life.

In addition to the Crazy Taxi film, the partnership will also adapt Sonic and Stranger Than Heaven. A new animated series featuring Sonic is in the works, with Carlos Stevens (Love, Death & Robots, The Alchemist’s Letter) and Toru Nakahara leading the development. Aimed at an upper pre-school audience, the series promises to be a “high-voltage, comedic, yet emotionally grounded experience for kids who crave a bit of edge, attitude, and a sense of belonging.”

The live-action adaptation of RGG Studio’s upcoming game, Stranger Than Heaven, aims to provide a fresh perspective on this epic franchise. Toru Nakahara will also produce this film.

“Expect something cute yet cool for Sonic, hilariously crazy for Crazy Taxi, and a badass action drama for Stranger Than Heaven. We’ve got some amazing creative ideas lined up, and we’re just getting started,” said Nakahara, Sega’s Head Producer. “The whole team is absolutely thrilled!” Nakahara has been involved in producing several of Sega’s recent adaptations, including all three Sonic the Hedgehog movies and the Knuckles miniseries. “Great games already have what every adaptation is chasing — beloved characters, familiar worlds, and dedicated fandoms,” noted Brandon Riegg, VP of Nonfiction and Transmedia at Netflix. “With Crazy Taxi, Sonic, and Stranger Than Heaven, we get to explore three distinct eras of Sega’s catalog, celebrating what fans love while introducing these franchises to new audiences.”

The Crazy Taxi film is expected to be the first project released, currently scheduled for 2027. Additionally, the upcoming game Crazy Taxi World Tour is set to launch next year. However, the return of this classic series has been marred by controversy surrounding the use of AI-generated content. “In Crazy Taxi: World Tour, generative AI was utilized during the ideation process for background objects. However, no AI-generated content will be included in the final game,” states the Steam description. Let’s hope the upcoming movie avoids any AI-related issues.

Crazy Taxi: World Tour is set to hit consoles and PC next year.
