Marathon Postpones New Content and Abandons Seasons Amidst Struggles for Survival

Marathon has had a challenging summer, and it seems the outlook for Bungie’s live-service sci-fi shooter isn’t improving anytime soon. The studio has announced that the seasonal update originally scheduled for September has been pushed back to December, and the seasonal model itself is being phased out. “Addressing player feedback requires us to change both what we’re building and how we deliver it,” the studio stated recently.

In a blog post, Bungie shared, “We previously shared plans for Marathon’s next major update to launch on September 22. We know many players were looking forward to it, and we appreciate your patience. We are adjusting our plans to ensure the update meets your expectations.”

The update went on to explain that the content initially set for September will now be part of the Symbiosis update, launching on December 8. This update will introduce a new Runner shell, a permanent PvE experience, and a revamped Perimeter zone, along with a social space/firing range, an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, and enhancements to new player onboarding.

Before that, a smaller, focused update is scheduled for October 6, which will reset progression and the in-game economy, refresh rewards, and improve the live game. This will give the team the necessary time to develop the larger experiences planned for December and March.

Bungie is also shifting away from a rigid seasonal schedule. Instead of linking major updates to fixed seasonal timelines, the team will have more flexibility to build, test, and refine features before they launch.

Since the game’s release, players have expressed a desire for more depth, variety, stronger progression, and better long-term engagement. Bungie acknowledges this feedback and recognizes that addressing it requires changes in both development and delivery.

The October update is set to include a progression and economy reset, a new reward pass, further quality-of-life improvements, and additional live tuning and balance changes. However, for those already feeling fatigued by Marathon, this may not be enough to retain their interest. The two months leading up to December will focus on “running gameplay experiments and sharing what we’re learning.”

In December, Bungie promises to kick off a more “alien and dynamic survival experience” with the introduction of its first dedicated PvE mode. This will come alongside a refreshed Perimeter experience, a new social space with a firing range, a new Runner shell, an experimental PvP Team Deathmatch mode, and the first of several improvements to the new-player experience.

Hopefully, the wait will prove worthwhile. The peak daily concurrent players on Steam have been steadily declining throughout the summer, and recent layoffs at Bungie, which affected some of the team working on Marathon, have raised concerns about the game’s future. If the Symbiosis update can deliver, it might just mark the beginning of a new chapter for the game.
