Understanding the Post-Credits Scene in Marvel’s Wolverine
Marvel’s Wolverine sets the stage for a potential sequel, and true to Marvel’s style, the most direct hint comes in the post-credits scenes. If you’re not well-versed in X-Men lore or are trying to make sense of Insomniac’s take on Logan’s story, you might be curious about what these scenes imply. Here’s a quick rundown of how the game reinterprets X-Men character backgrounds to pave the way for future adventures.
There are two post-credits scenes, with the first being accessible to all players, while the second requires a bit of effort to unlock. In the first scene, we find Sabretooth discovering what looks like another Helix Engine, a device used throughout the game to awaken dormant mutants. This one appears to be fully functional, unlike the one that gets repaired and utilized during the main storyline. Sabretooth is drawn to it by the voice of Apocalypse, which has been echoing in his mind since he activated the Helix Engine himself.
Although Apocalypse’s voice is a recurring element in Wolverine, the game doesn’t delve deeply into his backstory. Known as En Sabah Nur, Apocalypse is a long-standing antagonist in the X-Men universe, believed to be one of the first mutants, born in ancient Egypt long before the heroes we encounter in Wolverine. He’s recognized as one of Marvel’s most formidable villains, with the ability to alter his molecular structure, superhuman strength, and immense psychic powers.
A key aspect of Apocalypse’s character is his association with the “four horsemen,” a nod to the biblical figures symbolizing the apocalypse, each representing Famine, Death, War, and Pestilence. The lineup of these horsemen has varied over time, with one notable group from the Fox films including Storm, Psylocke, Archangel, and Magneto. In the context of Marvel’s Wolverine, it seems Sabretooth is part of this group, though the identities of the other three remain a mystery. They could be anyone from the Marvel universe, so it’ll be interesting to see who Insomniac decides to reveal. At one point in his extensive history, Logan was known as the Horseman of Death, a role he recalls throughout the game, and he nearly embraced that identity again before Jean erased Apocalypse’s influence from his mind along with many of his memories.
The second post-credits scene can only be viewed after completing the game and achieving at least a bronze rank in every Nightmare Door trial. In this scene, we see Logan 75 years before the main events of the game, wandering through the farm where he and Jean once lived. She recounts the story of their first meeting centuries ago and how she initially purged the concept of Death from his psyche. Since then, she has experienced multiple deaths and rebirths, akin to a phoenix, yet they have always found their way back to each other. The flashback concludes with them reuniting in the cabin, one of the few joyful memories they share from their many lives together.
By the end of Wolverine, Logan’s memories have been wiped, prompting him to leave Jean and her friends in search of his true self, hoping to reclaim at least a fragment of his past. It’ll be exciting to see how this journey unfolds if the game succeeds and Insomniac decides to develop a sequel in the future.
