Spider-Man: Brand New Day Loses Box Office Crown While Approaching Record Milestone
Spider-Man’s box office dominance has hit a snag — sort of. Since its debut on July 31, *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* has been the reigning champ at the domestic box office, but that streak ended this past weekend. The new legacy sequel *Practical Magic 2*, featuring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, pulled in $30 million, claiming the top spot. Meanwhile, *Brand New Day* had to settle for second place with $8.4 million.
However, *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* is on the brink of breaking another record. Its weekend earnings pushed its domestic total past $935 million, leaving it just shy of $2 million from surpassing *Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens* ($936.6 million) as the highest-grossing film in the domestic market, which includes the U.S. and Canada.
Before its release, *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* was already making waves at the box office, raking in $72 million from early preview screenings and achieving a massive $360 million domestic opening, outpacing *Avengers: Endgame* ($357 million). It swiftly crossed the $1 billion mark globally and became the second-fastest film to reach $2 billion worldwide, trailing only *Avengers: Endgame*.
Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Spider-Man has now amassed over $2.4 billion globally, making it the third-highest-grossing film of all time, behind *Avatar* and *Avengers: Endgame*, which is set for a re-release in theaters. With the impressive box office performance of *Brand New Day*, Holland has now claimed the title of the highest-grossing lead actor ever, a title typically held by those starring in the biggest Marvel films (and Zoe Saldana for her roles in *Avatar*).
Not too shabby for a guy who’s ready to hang up the red-and-blue suit!
And I’m not referring to Miles Morales.
