This doorbell camera allows a security guard to monitor your entrance.

SimpliSafe is stepping up its home security game with the launch of the AI-driven Video Doorbell Series 2, now available for $199.99. This new doorbell integrates seamlessly with the company’s Active Guard Outdoor Protection service, which starts at $49.99 per month. By combining AI technology with live monitoring agents, it aims to proactively identify and respond to potential threats.

When the doorbell’s camera picks up suspicious activity, it utilizes on-device AI, cloud-based computer vision, and facial recognition to alert a SimpliSafe monitoring agent. This agent can then access the live feed to communicate with and potentially deter intruders or package thieves.

The SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Series 2 features a wired design with impressive specs, including 2K resolution, a 10x zoom, a 150-degree field of view, two-way audio, and a built-in siren. It offers smart alerts for both people and packages, up to five seconds of pre-roll video, and supports dual-band Wi-Fi. To operate, it requires a SimpliSafe base station and keypad, and it’s compatible with any monitored SimpliSafe plan, as well as self-monitored plans that include video recording.

Active Guard, which debuted in 2023 on SimpliSafe’s indoor camera and expanded to outdoor cameras in 2024, is now part of this latest doorbell offering. This feature is optional, allowing agents to view live footage only when the system is armed and triggered. Active Guard necessitates a Pro or Plus monitoring plan, starting at $49.99 per month. Besides deterring intruders, SimpliSafe claims this system can provide emergency services with more precise information.

For those concerned about privacy, the company has outlined its practices, noting that footage is encrypted both at rest and in transit (though not end-to-end) and that camera footage will not be shared with law enforcement unless legally required.

The doorbell also includes color-coded LED lights to indicate when a monitoring agent (amber) or homeowner (blue) is speaking, and users can create a library of familiar faces to prevent startling visitors like dog walkers.

In comparison, Ring offers a similar feature called Virtual Guard, which works with its Ring Alarm system for $99 a month. Having a live person verify potential threats can be invaluable, especially in areas where false alarms can lead to fines, but for many, this level of security might feel excessive.
