The Last of Us on HBO will conclude after its third season.
The journey of The Last of Us on HBO is nearing its conclusion. While the upcoming third season was already intended to wrap up the adaptation of the second game in Naughty Dog’s celebrated series, there was a glimmer of hope for potential continuation. However, those hopes have been dashed by HBO’s leadership.
In a recent discussion, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, Casey Bloys, provided updates on various projects, including The Last of Us. He confirmed that, “Craig [Mazin] has planned it as the final season.” Mazin, who co-created and serves as showrunner for the series, has crafted a narrative that reflects the game’s depth.
The first season successfully adapted the original game, while HBO chose to split Part 2 into two seasons to showcase the perspectives of its dual protagonists. Season 2 follows Ellie (Bella Ramsey) on her revenge-fueled journey after Joel’s (Pedro Pascal) death and her pursuit of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). Season 3 will shift the narrative lens, recounting the same events from Abby’s viewpoint and introducing Lev, portrayed by Michelle Mao.
Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the game series, collaborated with Mazin on the HBO adaptation. Although he served as a showrunner and writer for the first two seasons, he has stepped back from season 3. Recently, he has distanced himself and Naughty Dog from the series, particularly after the mixed reception of the second season. In a recent interview, he clarified that Naughty Dog had no creative involvement in the final season, while hinting at future plans for the franchise.
As for the release date of season 3, Bloys confirmed it is slated for 2027, though no specific date or timeframe was provided. Fans can take solace in the fact that Sony is also developing a God of War series for Prime Video, ensuring the appetite for game adaptations continues to be satisfied.
