Guy Ritchie’s 128-minute action film claims the title of the top detective thriller on streaming platforms.

Guy Ritchie has always steered clear of crafting polite British films about genteel characters.

Instead, he’s carved out a niche with stylish crime flicks packed with quick-witted gangsters, intricate plots, and unexpected violence. This approach has proven successful in projects like The Gentlemen, a Netflix series where an aristocrat inherits a family estate and stumbles upon a vast marijuana operation.

In recent years, Ritchie has ramped up the action. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare transformed a band of British military operatives into a charismatic action squad, while this year’s In the Grey paired Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill in a globe-trotting heist that escalates into full-blown war. Although it didn’t receive rave reviews, it delivered the slick action fans expect from Ritchie.

Now, one of Ritchie’s earlier films is making a comeback on streaming platforms.

Released over 15 years ago, Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes has resurfaced as audiences revisit his unique interpretation of the iconic detective. It’s currently the No. 4 streamed movie on Apple TV worldwide, according to FlixPatrol.

This film is essentially a Guy Ritchie action flick dressed up as a Sherlock Holmes story. The timing is also fortuitous, as Ritchie’s Young Sherlock premiered on Prime Video earlier this year, giving him another chance to reimagine the character. The series features Hero Fiennes Tiffin as a young Holmes and has already been renewed for a second season.

In Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, Robert Downey Jr. portrays the legendary detective as he investigates a string of gruesome murders in Victorian London alongside his longtime partner, Dr. John Watson, played by Jude Law. Their investigation leads them to Lord Blackwood, portrayed by Mark Strong, an occult-obsessed criminal who seems to rise from the dead after his execution. Holmes, of course, is skeptical of any supernatural claims.

This adaptation presents a more physical version of Holmes than many previous portrayals. Downey Jr.’s detective remains a master of deduction but is just as likely to throw a punch or think on his feet during a brawl. Law’s Watson is more than just a sidekick, while Rachel McAdams plays Irene Adler, Holmes’ former rival and love interest.

The 2009 film boasts a 77% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and was a box-office hit, raking in around $524 million globally against a reported budget of $90 million.

This success paved the way for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2011, which introduced Professor Moriarty as Holmes’ latest adversary. The sequel is also available on Apple TV in the U.S., making it easy to binge-watch the Ritchie-Holmes saga.
