Bose’s upcoming open earbuds promise enhanced bass, increased volume, and longer battery life.

Bose has unveiled the latest iteration of its Ultra Open Earbuds, which played a pivotal role in popularizing clip-on wireless earbuds about two and a half years ago. The new Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen) come with a refined design and enhancements in sound quality and battery performance. Additionally, there’s a more budget-friendly option called the Bose Sport Open Earbuds, crafted for a secure and stable fit during workouts.

Preorders for the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen) will kick off on September 19th at a price of $299, with general availability starting on October 1st. They will be offered in a variety of colors, including black, white smoke, cherry chocolate, olive green, and sky pink. The Bose Sport Open Earbuds will also be available for preorder on the same date, priced at $199, and come in black, white smoke, and eucalyptus green.

The design of the Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen) remains largely unchanged, featuring a clip-on style that secures to the outer ear. They utilize a transducer to channel audio into the ear canal while minimizing sound leakage, as Bose emphasizes. Unlike many earbuds, these do not include active noise cancellation (ANC), as they are intended to allow users to remain aware of their surroundings while enjoying music or podcasts.

The refreshed design includes a new beveled finish on the metal cap of each earbud, along with a new driver that offers higher volume levels and deeper bass through automatic adjustments. A new Cinema Mode enhances the listening experience by simulating a broader, more immersive soundstage using Bose’s TrueSpatial technology, ensuring that dialogue remains clear and centered. Battery life has improved, now offering up to nine hours of use on a single charge (up from seven hours), plus an additional 19.5 hours of playback from the redesigned case, which can now stand upright for wireless charging.

The Bose Sport Open Earbuds adopt a similar clip-on design but feature a thinner cuff with a soft silicone matte finish for better grip, ensuring they stay in place during vigorous activities like running or cartwheels. They also include automatic volume adjustments that respond to ambient noise, ensuring your audio remains clear. The customizable shortcut button on each earbud has a textured surface for easier access while exercising. Battery life for the Sport version is rated at up to seven hours, with an extra 22 hours available from the wireless charging case.
