Streamers Clash in Halloween Showdown
The Toronto International Film Festival has become a hotspot not just for film enthusiasts but also for those eager to see what’s on the horizon in streaming. This year, four major streaming platforms—Peacock, Netflix, Amazon, and AMC—unveiled sneak peeks of their upcoming horror-themed series set to launch soon, highlighting the significance of October in the streaming landscape.
Leading the pack is the highly anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel, Carrie, which is set to debut on Prime Video. Directed by Mike Flanagan, known for his previous King adaptations like Doctor Sleep and his acclaimed Netflix series such as The Haunting of Hill House, this version of Carrie promises a fresh take. While it retains the core narrative of a bullied girl unleashing her psychic powers, it modernizes the story with a focus on cyberbullying. As a series, it allows for deeper exploration of the characters and themes, giving Flanagan ample room for his signature lengthy monologues. Early impressions of the premiere episode suggest a compelling blend of elements that resonate well.
On the Netflix side, a new series titled Below is set to premiere on October 8th, just a day after Carrie. I had the chance to view the first two episodes of this six-part series, and while it diverges from the style of Hill House, it maintains a similarly dark and mysterious vibe. Below centers on an ancient sea creature that begins to terrorize a small fishing village in Newfoundland. The show effectively builds suspense around the creature’s reveal while intertwining family drama, featuring Josh Hartnett as a struggling fisherman trying to hold his family together.
Peacock is also entering the horror arena with Crystal Lake, a prequel series that delves into the backstory of Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s mother from the iconic Friday the 13th franchise. Starring Linda Cardellini, the show explores her descent into despair after the tragic drowning of her son. Initially skeptical about the need for this backstory, I found the first two episodes at TIFF surprisingly engaging, with Cardellini delivering a standout performance. The series balances tension and drama with slasher-style gore, making for a gripping start. All episodes of Crystal Lake will be available on Peacock starting October 15th.
Lastly, AMC Plus is gearing up to release Yaga, a supernatural detective series premiering on October 23rd. While I missed the premiere screening, the cast, which includes Carrie-Anne Moss and Hudson Williams, along with an intriguing trailer, suggests it could be a noteworthy addition to the genre.
It’s clear that horror is thriving in 2026, with hits like Backrooms and Obsession dominating the box office and Widow’s Bay making waves at the Emmys. As streaming platforms continue to tap into this trend, October is shaping up to be an exciting month for horror aficionados.
