Snap Introduces Specs AI Tool for iOS and Mac Users

Snap is rolling out “Specs Intelligence,” an innovative AI assistant designed to link with your digital accounts, streamlining tasks and managing travel details. This new feature is akin to AI assistants like others in the market, but Snap is branding Specs Intelligence as an “anticipatory AI service” that helps you focus on immediate priorities while progressing toward your long-term objectives. You can also engage in conversations with it, just like with other AI tools.

Specs Intelligence launches alongside Specs, Snap’s inaugural consumer augmented reality glasses. However, it’s also available for iOS in preview mode, with a waitlist for the complete early-access experience set to arrive on Mac. Snap hasn’t disclosed how the preview version differs from the full experience.

Here’s how Specs Intelligence operates, as explained by Snap:
> SPECS Intelligence learns about your goals, priorities, relationships, and routines through the apps and tools you choose to connect. It’s designed to maintain that personal context across devices and enhance its understanding over time, aiding you in balancing work, personal tasks, and your interests.
> SPECS Intelligence anticipates when assistance would be beneficial, proactively presenting relevant information and actions without needing a prompt. For instance, before a meeting, it might highlight key decisions, questions to ask, and reminders. For an upcoming trip, it could consolidate flight, hotel, and dining plans while also noting a work deadline that coincides with your travel.

When using Specs Intelligence with the Specs AR glasses, the device can display personal content “directly into view” when it’s relevant, such as during a daily briefing before work. According to a demonstration, Specs Intelligence can integrate with apps like Gmail and Slack.

Specs Intelligence employs “a proprietary combination of open-source models hosted in the US alongside local LLMs,” as stated by spokesperson Cassie Bumgarner, who noted that “We regularly update the mixture of models as we continue iterating towards the best version of SPECS Intelligence.” However, the company faces significant challenges in building user trust regarding their data and information from connected services. Snap is addressing these concerns by assuring users that it cannot access personal content used with Specs Intelligence and that “Personal content from connected accounts will not be used to train or fine-tune Snap’s AI models, or to serve personalized ads.” Nonetheless, gaining user confidence remains a considerable hurdle, especially given the unease surrounding other AI assistants with extensive data access.
