Twitch CEO Predicts GTA 6 Will Bring Massive Viewer Surge, Hints at Multiplayer Launch Next Year

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to be the most significant video game launch of the year, possibly even the biggest in decades. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy believes that other developers should steer clear of its release, as he anticipates the game will dominate gamers’ attention at least until January. After discussions with Rockstar, he also expects that GTA 6’s online mode will debut sometime next year, providing an additional surge of interest.

In a recent interview, Clancy shared his expectations for GTA 6, which is launching in November for PS5 and Xbox. He predicts it will be a massive draw on Twitch, with players and content creators eager to stream the highly awaited open-world experience to audiences worldwide. Clancy also believes that GTA 6 will bring back users to Twitch who haven’t logged in for a while. He mentioned that Twitch executives have been in talks with Rockstar regarding the game’s launch strategy.

“We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators,” Clancy stated. “You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”

This statement raises some eyebrows. While Clancy’s assertion about the multiplayer mode arriving next year is framed as an expectation, his confident delivery suggests it’s a strong possibility. However, Rockstar has yet to officially confirm this. GTA 6 is set to launch as a single-player experience on November 19.

There have been inquiries made to Rockstar regarding Clancy’s comments and the multiplayer plans for GTA 6.

What we do know is that the online mode is likely to support up to 32 players, based on information from previous court documents related to Rockstar’s employee terminations, which some have alleged were attempts to undermine union efforts. Rockstar claims the dismissals were due to leaks about the game, including details about the multiplayer player count.

Regardless of the multiplayer’s release timing, Clancy anticipates a significant increase in overall Twitch viewership.

“It absolutely will spike the overall viewership meaningfully,” Clancy remarked. “How much I have no idea.”
