Level-5 Issues Official Apology for Excessive AI Utilization

Level-5 has openly acknowledged its use of AI to streamline the game development process, a move that hasn’t resonated well with many players. This is particularly concerning given the studio’s strong fanbase built around beloved franchises like Yo-Kai Watch and Professor Layton. In response to the backlash regarding AI usage in recent trailers, Level-5 has released a statement outlining its plans to address these concerns.

Fans have been scrutinizing Level-5’s trailers for signs of AI involvement, even when it might not be present. During the latest Nintendo Direct, the studio showcased a trailer for Yo-Kai Watch 2: Haunted Domain, which was also featured the next day at Level-5 Vision 2026. Although the footage appeared similar, some details seemed altered in the latter presentation, raising alarms among players and intensifying the AI allegations. The situation escalated further when the presentation included a peculiar animated representation of CEO Akihiro Hino, which many found unsettling.

In response to the growing concerns, both Level-5 and Hino have issued statements. In an official blog post, Level-5 clarified that the oddities noted by players, such as the strange vending machine and poorly drawn electrical wires, were the result of human error rather than AI. They emphasized that these peculiarities were hand-drawn by an artist.

Regarding the discrepancies in the Yo-Kai Watch 2: Haunted Domain trailer, the company explained that they had to use an earlier version due to Nintendo’s tight deadlines. They did not clarify whether AI was involved in this older trailer. However, Level-5 plans to release an updated version at the Tokyo Game Show, assuring fans that it will be free of both AI and human errors.

The studio also stated that no AI was utilized in the development of Professor Layton and The New World of Steam, asserting that “there is absolutely no direct use of AI in the game content.” Hino mentioned that AI is primarily employed to enhance efficiency, allowing creators to focus on delivering high-quality games more quickly while preserving the unique charm and individuality that only human creativity can provide.

Despite these reassurances, the controversy has left many fans feeling uneasy about Level-5’s creative direction. While the company’s statements aim to mitigate the situation, it remains uncertain whether they will restore trust among fans, especially given the recent emphasis on AI in their operations.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village returns.
