Blood of Dawnwalker 2 May Abandon Its Original’s Signature Feature, According to Developers
The Blood of Dawnwalker launched earlier this month, and it has certainly met high expectations. This debut title from Rebel Wolves, a studio formed by former developers of a renowned RPG, has established itself as a worthy successor to that iconic game. One standout feature of The Blood of Dawnwalker is its time management system, which may not be a staple in future installments of the series.
In The Blood of Dawnwalker, players control Coen, a character who transforms from human by day to vampire by night, and he has 30 in-game days to rescue his family from the clutches of the vampire lord Brencis and his minions. Time progresses only when Coen engages in specific actions, such as completing quests or leveling up. This mechanic helps keep the game from feeling overwhelming, but it has received mixed reactions from players. In a recent interview, the game director mentioned that the time system might not be a feature in future titles.
“If the story elements align, we will incorporate it. If not, we won’t force it,” the director explained. “We’ll experiment with this system to enhance the urgency of certain events, but I’m not promising that every game will follow the same pattern.”
Depending on your perspective on The Blood of Dawnwalker’s time mechanic, this news could be either a relief or a disappointment. Some players appreciate a popular mod that allows them to tweak or completely remove the time constraint. While some find the mechanic frustrating, preferring to explore at their own pace without the pressure of a countdown, others argue that it effectively creates a sense of urgency without being overly restrictive.
“There are many complaints about the time mechanics,” the director acknowledged, admitting he anticipated this issue prior to the game’s release. He pointed out that, due to the game’s design, players can complete about 80% of the content even with the time mechanic in play. While completionists might find this limiting, he noted that even in a game without such constraints, players can’t experience everything in a single playthrough due to varying choices and consequences.
The Blood of Dawnwalker is designed to kick off a series, having sold over a million copies in just three days. Rebel Wolves is actively seeking additional developers to assist with the sequel, and it remains to be seen if the next game will retain this unique time feature.
Many players have expressed their enjoyment of the time system. “The time mechanic doesn’t feel burdensome. In fact, the ability to explore freely without advancing time is liberating. Since the time cost is always clear, it becomes a conscious choice,” one player shared in their impressions of the game.
The Blood of Dawnwalker is currently available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
