Bungie Dismisses Rumors of Marathon and Destiny 2 Fusion

With Destiny 2 on hold and Marathon undergoing significant changes, fans briefly entertained the idea of a shared universe connecting both of Bungie’s sci-fi franchises. However, the studio quickly dismissed the unfounded rumors that were circulating on social media.

Recently, a rumor originating from an online forum gained traction within the Marathon community. It resembled a child’s wish list, filled with hopeful ideas and some confusing statements. The most notable claim suggested that with no Destiny 3 in the works and Bungie focusing on reviving Marathon, the two universes might merge into a single intellectual property.

The supposed leaker stated, “There has been some vague testing the waters internally to rework Marathon and Destiny into a single IP with Marathon representing the beginning of mankind’s Golden Age and to foreshadow more threats for a future Destiny project.” While this concept intrigued lore enthusiasts, it was swiftly refuted by Marathon’s creative director.

Julia Nardin, who has experience with both franchises, took to social media to clarify, “I can confirm that the ‘leak’ about us merging the two IPs is fake. They share a lot of the same Bungie DNA, but like siblings, they’re also their own independent entities. Please don’t believe everything you read online.”

Even before the official statement, Destiny 2 experts had already pointed out the inconsistencies in the rumor. “Destiny’s Golden Age was a time of abundance, while Marathon’s history is defined by scarcity and famine,” noted a prominent lore expert, who criticized the idea as a “terrible idea.” They also highlighted that the absence of The Traveler in Marathon’s lore would be a glaring oversight.

It’s easy to see why some fans might cling to the rumor. Destiny has over a decade of intricate storytelling, featuring rich backstories, numerous worlds, and various ancient alien races. The lack of new content for Destiny 2, along with no current plans for a sequel or spin-off, is a tough reality for many players to accept.

“We just want Destiny back,” one fan expressed in response to Nardin.
