New BBC Update Signals Revival of Doctor Who Series
Like the iconic Time Lord from the sci-fi series, Doctor Who is gearing up for a transformation. Following the show’s effective cancellation earlier this year, the BBC is on the hunt for a new production team to reboot the beloved franchise.
Today, the BBC released official documentation announcing the start of a “tendering” process, inviting production companies to pitch their ideas for the series. The timeline is tight, with submissions due by October 1—just two weeks away. If you happen to run a production company with deep pockets, now’s the time to act. After the submission deadline, the BBC plans to interview potential candidates by the end of January next year, aiming to make a final decision by March. If everything goes smoothly, the new version of Doctor Who could hit screens in 2028 or 2029.
The BBC has laid out some guidelines for applicants. They want the series to be “relevant, surprising, brave, and inspiring” for both long-time fans and newcomers. Visually, the show should aim to be “cinematic, distinctive, and ambitious.” While these descriptors may sound a bit vague, there is flexibility in the pitches, as the BBC is open to either a story-of-the-week format or a serialized approach, with no set number of episodes per season. Most importantly, pitches should embrace the essence of “distinctively British storytelling.”
Although Doctor Who wasn’t canceled in the traditional sense, the latest iteration faced a dramatic downfall. It all began in late 2025 when Disney ended its partnership with the show after two seasons. Earlier this year, showrunner Russell T. Davies also departed, leading to the cancellation of plans for a Christmas special.
This left the series on a wild cliffhanger. The final episode, “The Reality War,” concluded with the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) regenerating into Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), a character from the show’s history. This twist sparked speculation about whether Rose would be the next Doctor, a question that remains officially unanswered.
Whovians are no strangers to waiting.
