Far Cry TV Series Casts Widow’s Bay Actor and Others

Video game adaptations in film and television have been around for a while, but they’ve really surged in popularity lately. A big part of this trend can be traced back to the success of HBO’s The Last of Us, especially its first season. Now, we’re seeing positive buzz around Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie, which has garnered praise from both critics and fans. Ubisoft and FX are also jumping into the mix with their adaptation of the Far Cry series, recently adding more talent to the cast, including Steve Buscemi.

According to reports, five new actors have joined the Far Cry cast: Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin, In Bruges), Hamish Linklater (this year’s Emmy favorite Widow’s Bay), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Sam Spruell (FX’s Alien: Earth), and Jamie Demetriou (Fleabag, The Roses). They will join previously announced cast members Rob McElhenney (credited as Rob Mac) and Lizzy Caplan. McElhenney is also co-creating the series alongside Noah Hawley, known for his work on FX hits like Legion, Fargo, and Alien: Earth.

The show will draw from Ubisoft’s Far Cry franchise, which debuted in 2004. While no specific plot details have been revealed yet, it remains unclear if the series will adapt any of the games directly. What is confirmed is that Ubisoft and FX are aiming for multiple seasons, with plans for an anthology format where each season will feature a different story and cast.

Far Cry was previously turned into a direct-to-video film in 2008, which didn’t make much of an impact. More recently, Netflix released the animated series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix in 2023, inspired by the standalone DLC Blood Dragon from Far Cry 3. Ubisoft also attempted to bring Assassin’s Creed to the big screen in 2016 with Michael Fassbender, but that effort didn’t go well. Here’s hoping Far Cry finds a better path.
