Oscar-Winning Director Joins the Roblox Movie Project
Roblox’s horror survival sensation, 99 Nights in the Forest, is set to make its cinematic debut. While specifics about the film remain under wraps, notable talents have been confirmed for the project: Josh Cooley and Sam Raimi.
Adaptations of video games into movies and TV shows have been around for years, but they’ve surged in popularity lately. The Super Mario Bros. films have been massive hits for Nintendo, each raking in over $1 billion. Following closely is the upcoming Minecraft Movie (2025), which already has a sequel in the works. Hollywood is eager to capitalize on this trend, with plans to adapt a variety of beloved video games into films, from The Legend of Zelda to Roblox titles like 99 Nights in the Forest.
As reported, Josh Cooley has been tapped to pen the screenplay for 99 Nights in the Forest. Cooley, who directed Transformers One (2024) and Toy Story 4 (2019), won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for the latter. He also wrote the screenplay for Inside Out (2015), which received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards.
Sam Raimi, known for his work on the Evil Dead series and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy, is also involved as a producer for 99 Nights in the Forest. With Cooley and Raimi on board, fans can feel confident that the film is in capable hands.
But 99 Nights in the Forest isn’t the only Roblox title making the leap to the big screen. Other popular games like Grow a Garden and Steal a Brainrot are also being adapted into films, with both currently in development. The writer behind adaptations of It and Until Dawn will be taking on these projects as well.
