WoW Fans Excited About New Lighting Enhancements in the Classic Game
World of Warcraft: Forever has kicked off its beta phase, allowing players who invested $30 to unlock the Skyborne Elves to dive into a limited portion of the game. However, the buzz among players isn’t about the new blue elf race, the camping feature, or the fresh quests.
Instead, everyone seems to be captivated by capturing stunning screenshots of sunsets.
And sunrises, misty forests, and just about anything that looks breathtaking thanks to the revamped lighting system. For some background, WoW: Forever is built on the foundation of the original World of Warcraft. You know, the one that had a very different visual style.
Forever offers two modes: a classic mode that stays true to the original, and an updated version that retains the original world, textures, and models but enhances them with improved lighting, water effects, and more. It might sound a bit nerdy, but the enhancements are genuinely impressive. It’s fascinating to see how two decades of lighting technology can transform an older game, especially without pushing it into an awkward HD overhaul that would clash with the Classic WoW aesthetic.
Naturally, this has led to a flurry of screenshots showcasing sunsets, sunrises, sunbeams streaming through trees, and enchanting misty woods! Here are a few standout shots I came across, but there are countless more:
I particularly love this one, as it features a comparison and you can spot Mount Hyjal in the background! Amazing!
I could easily share more; there are just so many. It reminds me of the HD-2D projects that have been popping up, where the essence of a retro game is preserved while modern updates make it visually stunning without losing the classic feel.
I haven’t had the chance to play during sunrise or sunset yet, but the top image in this post is one I snapped in the Skyborne starting area. While there’s no original version to compare it to since Skyborne Elves didn’t exist back then, it still looks pretty good. It retains that old WoW charm, just with a bit more polish.
And yes, I’ve noticed some players expressing their dislike for the new visuals. Good news for those who aren’t fans: you can disable all these enhancements if you prefer. Enjoy the freedom!
