Wolverine Hotfix Reduces ‘Fart Gas’ Effectiveness, Toggle Option Under Consideration
Before its release, Marvel’s Wolverine sparked discussions around the controversial “fart gas” mechanic, which involves scent trails that help Logan find objectives during missions. This feature, often ridiculed, is now being toned down as the developers at Insomniac Games consider adding an option to disable it entirely.
On September 19, a surprise hotfix for the latest PlayStation 5 exclusive not only addressed some game crashes reported by players but also adjusted the visibility of the scent trails guiding Logan to his next goal throughout various game segments.
The patch notes from Insomniac Games stated, “Additionally, this hotfix adjusts the presentation of the Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators, including reduced opacity to make these visuals less intense. Our team continues to evaluate ways to further improve Senses in the game, including exploring toggleable options for a future update.”
Players quickly tested the changes, sharing their findings online. The so-called “fart gas” was indeed toned down significantly. Instead of a bright neon trail, players now see a subtle pool of ambient color on the ground in front of Logan. While it still effectively indicates the direction to go, it’s less obtrusive. It’s unclear why Insomniac hasn’t implemented the toggle yet, but it seems likely that players will have the option to turn it off completely in the future.
However, the debate over the scent trail may not be as impactful as it seems. While it became a talking point before the game launched, removing it won’t transform Wolverine into an exploration-focused walking simulator. At its heart, this action-adventure title remains a combat-driven comic book experience centered on battling foes to unlock the next thrilling cutscene. Whether or not the “fart gas” is present, Wolverine is not designed to be an ambient open-world game like last year’s Ghost of Yotei.
And that’s perfectly okay. There are plenty of other intriguing elements in Wolverine worth discussing.
