Call of Duty: Warzone to Close Servers Next Month on PS4 and Xbox One

Call of Duty: Warzone, the expansive free-to-play battle royale experience, is set to bid farewell to last-gen consoles. Following the reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 in May, it was confirmed that Warzone will no longer be accessible on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year.

Support for Warzone on these platforms will conclude shortly after the debut of season 1 for Modern Warfare 4, which launches on October 23. Players on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X will still be able to enjoy Warzone.

The decision to end support for Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One isn’t unexpected, especially since Modern Warfare 4 is also skipping last-gen consoles. This year’s mainline entry will be available on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Warzone will continue to thrive on current-gen platforms. Starting with season 1 of Modern Warfare 4, Warzone will integrate content and seasonal progression from Modern Warfare 4, creating a seamless experience between the two titles, as noted in a statement from the Call of Duty team.

While new downloads of Warzone are no longer available on PS4 and Xbox One, existing players can keep playing until the launch of MW4 season 1. In June, the in-game store for Warzone on these platforms will be taken down. However, players can still progress through free Battle Pass tiers and unlock new weapons in the remaining Black Ops 7 seasons, according to the Call of Duty team.

Originally released in 2020, Call of Duty: Warzone started as a free-to-play battle royale within the franchise. The original version was retired in 2023 after the launch of its successor, Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0. The 2022 iteration eventually dropped the “2.0” label and is now simply known as Call of Duty: Warzone.

The series is making a strong comeback.
