Amazon Questions the Reliability of Meta’s Muse AI Agent
Meta’s Muse AI agent has been barred from making purchases on Amazon for its users, as reported. A notification began appearing for Muse users stating that “continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.”
It seems that Meta did not inform Amazon about Muse’s intended access to its platform. Amazon raised concerns regarding privacy and security, particularly about Muse not disclosing its identity while browsing and potentially capturing customer credentials. An Amazon spokesperson commented that it’s clear that third-party applications making purchases on behalf of customers should operate transparently and respect the decisions of service providers regarding participation.
When Muse was introduced earlier this month, Meta claimed that the AI agent could not access secure login details or payment information. During testing, it was able to successfully purchase items from Amazon while other products remained in the cart. However, privacy issues have surfaced since the launch, with reports indicating that Muse can view user message contents without having the necessary permissions.
This action represents Amazon’s ongoing strategy to counter competition from other AI services and encourage customers to shop directly through its platform. Last November, Amazon took legal action against Perplexity in a similar effort to prevent its platform from being integrated into the AI search provider’s shopping experience, although a judge ruled in favor of Perplexity in August. Additionally, Amazon has started sending confirmation emails with less detailed information since July, omitting specific item names and images to prevent external AI services from mining that data.
