Unexpected Revival for Unplayable Kingdom Hearts Title
You’d be hard-pressed to find a game series more intricate than Kingdom Hearts. Since its debut in 2002, there have only been three mainline titles, but a slew of spin-offs complicates the narrative landscape significantly. One such spin-off, Kingdom Hearts Union X Dark Road, plays a crucial role in the overarching story. However, with Square Enix removing Union X Dark Road from digital storefronts in 2024, fans face a dilemma in piecing together this vital part of the Kingdom Hearts lore. Fortunately, a dedicated fan has stepped up with a potential solution.
On September 21, a Kingdom Hearts modder known as Arena7664 announced on X that they have successfully ported Union X Dark Road to mobile and PC via browser. They mentioned, “I’m pretty much ready to publish this aside from a couple things here and there.” Arena7664 clarified that the upcoming release will focus solely on Dark Road, which was originally part of Union X, as this port will feature the final version of the mobile app that allowed offline access to Dark Road, while the Union X storyline was only available through cutscenes.
This new port will support both Japanese and English versions and will be uploaded to the Internet Archive for preservation. Arena7664 plans to keep the gameplay experience largely intact but will introduce some quality-of-life enhancements. For those eager to dive into the story, there will be a feature to instantly unlock all cutscenes and an option to max out in-game currency for unrestricted unlocking and leveling. Additionally, players will have the ability to adjust the game speed. While a specific release date hasn’t been announced, Arena7664 assures that it won’t be long before they share a link to the finished product.
Union X Dark Road serves as a prequel to the mainline Kingdom Hearts games, chronologically setting the stage for the series. It follows the Master of Masters during the Keyblade War, while Dark Road delves into the origins of series antagonist Xehanort and his descent into darkness.
In the June 2026 Nintendo Direct gameplay trailer for Kingdom Hearts 4, several characters from Union X Dark Road made appearances, indicating that the spin-off’s narrative will likely be significant for the next mainline installment. While the exact connections between these characters and Sora’s journey remain unclear, fans will want to familiarize themselves with the story before the game launches. Or, you could always dive in without prior knowledge—after all, Kingdom Hearts is all about the vibes!
