Halo Studio Experiences Unusual Week with Promotions and Layoffs

Halo Studios, previously known as 343 Industries, has been impacted by the latest wave of layoffs and restructuring within Xbox. In a particularly unfortunate turn of events, one developer faced a surreal situation, being promoted and then let go within just 48 hours.

On September 22, Xbox announced additional layoffs and studio changes as part of its ongoing corporate “reset.” Over 250 employees were affected, as noted by Xbox executive Matt Booty, following a significant round of layoffs in July. The company is also transitioning Halo under Activision, which has led to the restructuring of Halo Studios into a support team.

Among those who lost their jobs in this latest round was Cinematic Director Josh Daniels, who shared that he had just received a promotion before being laid off.

“Promoted and laid off in the same week is pretty wild,” Daniels posted on LinkedIn. “I’m one of the many hit by the Halo Studios layoffs. I’ll be taking some offline time today, but very much would love to talk to anyone looking for Cinematic Direction or Production roles. Feel free to get in touch if anything looks like I might be a fit.”

This situation highlights a troubling approach to employee treatment and raises questions about the chaotic nature of these cuts. It’s hard to believe that all parts of Xbox are aligned and have a coherent long-term strategy when promotions and layoffs occur in such close succession.

Given that Xbox also laid off a Gears of War developer just days after they celebrated completing development on the upcoming E-Day, this pattern of behavior is becoming all too familiar.
