Sony Secures Major Deal with Spider-Man: Brand New Day Director
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has shattered box office records this year, becoming the highest-grossing domestic release ever and ranking third worldwide. It’s no surprise that Sony is keen to collaborate with director Destin Daniel Cretton on more projects, whether they involve Spider-Man or not. They’ve officially signed a three-year overall deal with him.
According to reports, this agreement will allow Cretton to develop films through Hisako, the production company he co-runs with Jeyun Munford. Sony Pictures’ motion picture group CEO and chairman Tom Rothman expressed enthusiasm, stating, “Destin is the real deal, and we are lucky to be in ongoing business with him and his team. Po’okela!” Cretton shared his excitement as well, saying, “I had the best time making Brand New Day with Tom Rothman, Sanford Panitch, and their team, and I’m thrilled to tell more meaningful stories that audiences can enjoy in theaters worldwide.”
2026 has been a standout year for Cretton. Brand New Day launched to rave reviews from both fans and critics, grossing over $900 million at the U.S. box office and surpassing the previous record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Beyond Spider-Man, Cretton co-created and executive-produced Marvel’s Wonder Man series, directing the first two episodes. The show was well-received, even earning an Emmy nomination for its lead, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, though it was unfortunately canceled by Disney despite plans for a second season.
Cretton’s next venture is Lionsgate’s live-action Naruto film, with casting reportedly underway and Charles Melton rumored to portray Kakashi. Filming is expected to start early next year. Additionally, there are discussions about Cretton developing a Hawaii Five-0 feature film for Paramount.
While the deal with Sony doesn’t specifically mention directing, the studio is eager to have Cretton return for the anticipated Brand New Day sequel. Although Marvel hasn’t announced any official plans for a fifth Tom Holland film, the success of Brand New Day will likely motivate everyone involved to pursue a sequel.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently in theaters, and Cretton’s other superhero film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is available for streaming on Disney Plus.
