OpenAI recruits top Patreon executives in preparation for a major announcement.

OpenAI has brought on three former executives from a well-known subscription platform to shape its strategy for creators. Sam Yam, co-founder and tech lead of the platform, shared on X that he’s joining OpenAI to spearhead Creator Product. He’s also bringing along Drew Rowny, the former product head, and Shannon Ma, the ex-engineering head, both of whom recently stepped down from their roles.

“We’re going to collaborate with creators at OpenAI and provide early access to a new suite of tools that I believe will be incredibly beneficial for creators and their communities,” Yam stated in his announcement. “Keep an eye on OpenAI DevDay next week! I’m diving in today and testing out some innovative early tools here!”

Dev Day is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29th, and Yam has also referenced a post from OpenAI’s CEO that hints at another significant announcement coming this week.

The addition of these key executives indicates that OpenAI is looking into opportunities in the creator monetization space, especially since the subscription platform has set the standard for the creator-subscription economy. This transition marks another setback for the platform, which recently revealed a comprehensive update plan to enhance its user features after a significant workforce reduction earlier this year.
