Mark Wahlberg’s overlooked 109-minute action thriller has become a major hit on Netflix.

Mark Wahlberg has made a name for himself playing law enforcement roles in films like The Other Guys, 2 Guns, and The Departed. However, he’s equally adept at stepping into the shoes of criminals, from a bank robber in The Italian Job to a man ensnared in a perilous criminal underworld in Four Brothers.

One of his lesser-known action thrillers finds him straddling the line between the two. In Contraband, Wahlberg portrays Chris Farraday, a family man who has attempted to leave his criminal past behind, only to be pulled back into that life when his loved ones are threatened. Now, over a decade after its theatrical debut, the film is gaining traction on Netflix.

Contraband, the 2012 action thriller directed by Baltasar Kormákur, is currently the fifth most-watched movie on Netflix in the U.S. If you’re on the fence about watching it, here’s what you need to know.

Wahlberg plays Chris Farraday, a former smuggler who has settled down with his wife and kids, hoping to leave his past behind. However, when his brother-in-law gets into hot water with a drug lord, Chris is forced to return to smuggling to protect his family.

He travels to Panama with a crew to recover a stash of counterfeit cash, but the mission quickly spirals out of control. Chris must tap into the skills and connections he thought he had left behind while evading those who want the money—and those who want him dead.

The film boasts a strong supporting cast, including Kate Beckinsale as Chris’ wife, Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi, Diego Luna, and J.K. Simmons.

While Contraband may not have been a critical favorite, holding a 50% rating from critics and 57% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, that doesn’t mean it lacks merit. It’s a straightforward crime thriller that can resonate with new viewers years after its release, especially when they’re in the mood for a familiar face, a high-stakes smuggling operation, and plenty of action.
