GTA 6 Leak Hackers Now Targeting the FBI with Threats

ShinyHunters, the hacking collective that made headlines in April by threatening the developers of Grand Theft Auto 6, has now escalated their activities by targeting the FBI. This new move marks a significant shift in their tactics.

Fans of Grand Theft Auto 6 might recall how ShinyHunters previously attempted to extort Rockstar Games for a ransom. When Rockstar brushed off their demands, the group retaliated by leaking sensitive information about the studio. Unlike the recent leak that showcased unauthorized gameplay footage, the earlier breach primarily revealed Rockstar’s financial data. It turns out that Rockstar was unfazed by the public exposure of how much players were spending on titles like GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption 2, which continue to rake in impressive revenue.

While the leaked figures intrigued analysts and journalists—who typically only receive broad financial overviews during investor calls—most gamers found the information less impactful. For instance, discovering that GTA Online generates around $1 million daily was surprising, but it didn’t change the gaming experience for the average player.

Interestingly, the FBI had issued a public service announcement about ShinyHunters just a month prior to their attack on Rockstar. The group had gained notoriety for breaching various institutions, including Harvard University and Pornhub, which seemed to embolden them to pursue larger targets. The FBI accused ShinyHunters of employing harassment tactics, including sending threatening messages to victims and their families, and even swatting incidents.

In response to the FBI’s characterization, ShinyHunters sought to retaliate by stealing personal information of current and former FBI employees from an online job portal. This breach reportedly includes sensitive data such as home addresses, phone numbers, and medical information for tens of thousands of individuals. The group has threatened to release this information publicly unless the FBI retracts or amends its advisory within a week.

The FBI has confirmed the breach and is currently investigating the situation. A spokesperson stated that they are working diligently to determine the source of the breach, whether it originated from a third party or within the FBI’s own systems.

Unlike the Rockstar incident, experts caution that the leak involving the FBI could pose serious national security risks. If ShinyHunters follows through on their threat, the leaked information could potentially fall into the hands of foreign intelligence agencies.
