Bungie Unveils Major Overhaul for Marathon with New Dedicated PvE Mode

Just days after announcing plans to revitalize Destiny 2 and evolve Marathon, the studio shared more insights into what this evolution entails. In an extensive blog post, the developer laid out its roadmap for the upcoming year of Marathon, which includes the introduction of the game’s first dedicated and permanent PvE mode, a team deathmatch mode, and a welcoming onboarding experience for both new and returning players.

The multi-month strategy aims to shift Marathon from a “cutthroat, winner-takes-all PvEvP experience” to a format that caters to a wider audience.

“Some players want a quick, low-pressure run after work,” game director Del Chafe III and creative director Julia Nardin noted. “Some want to spend an entire night with their crew. Others want to test a build, compete directly against other players, chase a difficult challenge, or follow a strange clue deeper into the ruins of Tau Ceti IV.

“Marathon needs to support all of them.”

Following the Nightfall refresh set for October, the focus will shift to the Symbiosis update, scheduled for December. This update is described as a “significant step into the future” of Marathon, promising “more ways to play, more approachable ways to learn the game, and more opportunities to explore Tau Ceti IV in lower-pressure environments.” The first permanent PvE mode will be part of Symbiosis, allowing players to “explore, experiment, and take on challenges without the threat of being hunted by other Runners.”

Set to launch on December 8, Symbiosis will also introduce a competitive Team Deathmatch mode, an enhanced version of the beginner-friendly Perimeter map featuring a “significant visual overhaul,” and a new Shell named Bishop, characterized as Marathon’s high-performance robot samurai. “Bishop is a fast, surgical hunter-killer built around speed, surprise, and devastating bursts of melee damage,” the studio explained. “We look forward to seeing how players integrate Bishop into their crews and the various experiences within Marathon.”

To better accommodate newcomers, the studio is also enhancing the onboarding process and creating a new social space that includes a built-in firing range.

The broader evolution of Marathon is slated for March 2027, with the studio indicating that there’s still much work ahead and a commitment to continue evolving the game well beyond 2027.

Launched in March, Marathon received positive feedback from both critics and players, though the studio acknowledged that it was sometimes too challenging and limited in its offerings, particularly for a wider audience. The goal now is to provide players with more than just a well-crafted extraction shooter, allowing them to delve into Marathon’s lore and gameplay.

More details on Symbiosis and the ongoing evolution of Marathon are expected in the coming months.

“We understand the skepticism,” the studio’s leads stated.
