A Veteran of Vanillaware Launches a New Studio for a 2D Fantasy Multimedia Project

Vanillaware has built a reputation for its visually stunning adventures, whether set in fantastical realms like Unicorn Overlord and Dragon’s Crown or in contemporary landscapes as seen in the acclaimed mecha narrative, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim. Takafumi Noda, a cherished figure at the studio until his departure in March 2025, was celebrated for his artistic vision and leadership, which were evident in the studio’s signature hand-drawn style. Now, he aims to capture that same magic with his new venture, Ignisphere Studios, and its inaugural game, Dawngazer.

This ambitious project is more than just a single game; it aims to create an entire original universe that can support various projects across different media. At the heart of this initiative is Dawngazer, a fresh RPG set to launch in 2028 for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, with publishing handled by Good Smile Company. Development is bolstered by Monochrome Corporation, known for its contributions to both anime and gaming, alongside involvement from the Japanese media giant Kadokawa.

A teaser trailer has been released, though it offers only a glimpse of what’s to come. It features an unnamed female soldier navigating a lively town populated by both humans and humanoid beings, accompanied by fellow soldiers and a cat-like creature, all set to a haunting folk melody. The trailer culminates in a poignant moment where our protagonist pays tribute to the royal family her team is evidently fighting for, now reduced to graves. While the narrative details are sparse, the trailer showcases impressive 2D animation and a diverse cast, aligning perfectly with the project’s broader aspirations.

Noda envisions the Ignisphere project as a multimedia intellectual property that can explore stories across various formats within the same universe. He noted, “I think it’s interesting that novels and merchandise can show places, characters, and history that can’t be fully depicted in a game. In the game, the focus is on the story experienced by the player, but other media can showcase different countries or characters.” With a commitment to worldbuilding that supports such expansive storytelling, and given Noda’s meticulous attention to detail in design and narrative, it will be fascinating to see how he expands his creative vision beyond traditional gaming boundaries.
