Blizzard Affirms Seasonal Hero Releases in Overwatch Are Beneficial for the Game
2026 has been a monumental year for Overwatch. Alongside a yearlong narrative arc that has reinvigorated the hero shooter, Blizzard Entertainment is set to introduce an impressive 10 new heroes this year. This marks a significant shift from the previous pace, which averaged about three heroes annually. While the 10th anniversary of Overwatch was a unique event, Blizzard is committed to maintaining a seasonal release schedule for heroes.
In a conversation with Blizzard’s Walter Kong, who has transitioned from GM of Overwatch to senior VP of live game development, and Alec Dawson, associate game director for Overwatch, both leaders expressed that seasonal hero releases “are the right thing for the game.”
During BlizzCon 2026, the Overwatch team revealed a new vampire-inspired support hero named Doctrine and teased the upcoming 10th hero, a mysterious Omnic detective. They also hinted at exciting developments for 2027. Blizzard plans to host another Spotlight showcase in February to unveil what’s next for Overwatch. Kong noted that the 2026 Overwatch Spotlight exceeded expectations, generating significant excitement and re-engaging the community.
“The results were beyond our expectations in terms of the energy that it created and in terms of the impact of putting Overwatch back into the topic of conversation for gamers,” Kong shared. “It gave everyone on the team a sigh of relief that our hypothesis was validated by this enthusiasm.
“As the year has progressed and we’ve rolled out heroes while integrating them into the year-long story arc, it has established a rhythm that feels comfortable and right. While I can’t guarantee we’ll replicate the same success in February next year, I can confidently say that seasonal hero releases are the right approach for the game. We’ve learned a lot this year, and that knowledge will shape our plans for 2027.”
In February, when Blizzard launched five new Overwatch heroes and dropped the “2” from the sequel’s title, player reactions were immediate. Steam data showed that concurrent player counts more than doubled following these sweeping changes, clearly indicating a demand for more heroes. If Blizzard adheres to its seasonal strategy, players can expect five or six new heroes each year, and the team is ready to tackle these challenges.
“When you’re developing a live-service game like Overwatch, there are constant challenges,” Dawson explained. “It’s crucial to understand what players are asking for, remain flexible to meet those needs, and still manage to surprise them.
“This year, we’ve established our commitment to returning to narrative in Overwatch and delivering compelling stories annually. We will release heroes every season, and now we need to consider what comes next and how to ensure Overwatch remains the most polished competitive shooter we envision.”
By the end of 2026, Overwatch will feature a roster of 55 heroes, with the potential to reach 60 next year if the seasonal release pattern continues. This is a significant increase from the original 21 heroes at launch. Despite this growth, Dawson believes there are still plenty of ideas for new heroes that will introduce fresh personalities, mechanics, and representation. When asked if the roster might become overwhelming, he responded confidently.
“I don’t think we’re at that limit yet,” Dawson said. “Maybe ask us when we hit 100 or something!”
The next season of Overwatch will kick off on October 6, introducing the new hero Doctrine along with a new map at the start of season 5.
