Apple Faces $5.7 Billion Penalty for Haptic Technology Patent Infringement

In 2021, Taction, a company specializing in haptic technology, took legal action against Apple, claiming the tech giant violated two of its patents. Recently, a federal jury in San Diego ruled in favor of Taction, awarding the company over $5.7 billion in damages. The case revolved around U.S. Patent Nos. 10,659,885 and 10,820,117, which pertain to vibration-based tactile transducer technology that enhances user interaction by allowing them to feel device responses.

Taction contended that Apple’s Taptic Engine, found in its Apple Watches and iPhones, utilized their patented technology without authorization, and the jury concurred. They determined that Apple infringed on two claims from one patent and one claim from the other. However, the jury did not conclude that Apple acted willfully in its infringement. Taction had alleged that Apple reverse-engineered the technology from two Kannon gaming headsets.

Apple has announced plans to appeal the verdict. Further comments have been requested, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
