Backrooms director shares insights on the future direction of the series.
In a standout year for horror, one of the most unexpected successes has been Backrooms. Kane Parsons made his feature-film directorial debut by skillfully bringing his viral YouTube series to the big screen, achieving remarkable critical acclaim and box office success. So, what’s next for Parsons and Backrooms after conquering both YouTube and film? The director has a clear vision, sharing his “dream scenario” for the next chapter of the story.
In a recent conversation, Parsons expressed that he has always envisioned a broader narrative arc for Backrooms beyond the film. “There’s been a very set arc to the whole thing from the beginning,” he noted, adding that he feels “absurdly excited at the idea of actually being able to follow through on all of it.” He envisions a limited series as the ideal format to explore the main conclusion of the story.
While it’s unclear if the series is currently in development, Parsons hinted at some upcoming projects, stating, “There’s a few things that I would love to talk about when I can soon.” Given the film’s record-breaking box office performance, it’s evident that Backrooms will return in some capacity. It achieved the highest opening weekend for an A24 film and made Parsons the youngest director to top the box office.
Though Parsons is hinting at a potential series, there are also rumors of a sequel in the works, with him set to return as director.
It’s possible that both a sequel and a series could be on the horizon. Parsons previously mentioned that he isn’t finished with the series and intends to expand it “outside the confines of this film.” The limited series could be a project for the future, but he emphasizes that it would wrap up a story arc he has planned, and there’s no rush to conclude the Backrooms phenomenon.
“A series would be my dream scenario, personally. But obviously, a series is a whole thing.”
