Blizzard races to keep up with the surge in popularity of World of Warcraft Forever.
It’s rare to hear about a game being too successful, but that’s the situation with World of Warcraft Forever. After its reveal at BlizzCon 2026, the latest version of Blizzard’s iconic MMO launched an official beta that has quickly become the most sought-after experience. The overwhelming demand has led to long wait times and various issues for players eager to dive in.
In response to this surge in popularity, Blizzard is making further adjustments to accommodate the influx of players.
Over the weekend, executive producer Holly Londale shared on X that the team “had to increase the WoW: Forever Beta population cap again. The wild ride continues.” This means Blizzard has raised the number of players who can access the game simultaneously to meet demand. This isn’t the first time they’ve made such a change since the beta launched on September 17.
The excitement surrounding the beta is unprecedented, even for World of Warcraft, a game that has remained relevant for years. Developer Josh Greenfield noted that Forever had “the craziest numbers I’ve seen in 17 years working at Blizzard” just a day after the beta’s release. With the game not yet fully available to the public, this bodes well for its future.
In essence, World of Warcraft Forever is the “Classic Plus” version of the MMO. It represents the third iteration of the game and will run alongside the retail version (which receives the latest expansions) and Classic (which offers a vanilla experience that progresses through past expansions). Forever will take place during the first year of vanilla World of Warcraft but will feature some modifications to the original experience, unlike Classic’s more faithful recreation.
Forever will have a level cap of 60 and introduce three brand-new zones not present at the game’s initial launch. Existing zones will be revamped, featuring over 1,000 new quests, nine new dungeons, two new raids, and a new race: the Skyborne Elves. The beta will run until October 21, with a full release scheduled for November 4. The game will be included in the standard World of Warcraft subscription, but the Skyborne Elves race will be available as a separate purchase for $29.99.
Despite its older design, ‘Classic Plus’ aims to provide a more accessible experience for new and casual players compared to the modern game.
