The Elder Scrolls Online Eases Demands for a Fallout: New Vegas-Inspired Skyrim Spin-Off
Fallout: New Vegas demonstrated how a skilled RPG developer like Obsidian could take the foundation of Fallout 3 and craft an outstanding game in a surprisingly short time. While it’s easy to oversimplify the process, the lasting impact of New Vegas raises questions about why The Elder Scrolls never received a similar single-player spin-off. Kurt Kuhlmann, co-lead designer of Skyrim, shared some insights into this missed opportunity.
He noted that The Elder Scrolls Online likely shifted focus away from single-player experiences. “There was a new Elder Scrolls product, and it was ongoing. It was creating new content constantly,” he explained. Kuhlmann, who had a contentious departure from Bethesda in 2023, added that many players now associate The Elder Scrolls primarily with the online game. “That’s their experience with it. That’s what they love. That’s where they got their Elder Scrolls gaming experience, and that’s probably what they want more of.”
While more content for The Elder Scrolls Online is on the way, it may not meet initial expectations due to significant cuts at Zenimax Online, the studio behind the MMO. Kuhlmann also speculated on other reasons for the absence of a New Vegas-style spin-off for The Elder Scrolls, particularly the rivalry that emerged within the community regarding whether New Vegas surpassed Fallout 3, and if Obsidian was a better guardian of the franchise.
He suggested that director Todd Howard might have been reluctant to recreate that competitive atmosphere for The Elder Scrolls, especially since the series is entirely developed in-house, unlike Fallout, which was acquired from Interplay. “Todd, from my time there, he is very protective of it,” Kuhlmann remarked. It’s tough to pinpoint which studio would have been a suitable candidate for a potential Elder Scrolls spin-off in the 2010s.
Obsidian has since ventured into its own first-person fantasy RPG with Avowed. However, it appears to be reassigned to work on Fallout projects under Bethesda, rather than focusing on Avowed 2. There’s a possibility that it could eventually take on a role related to The Elder Scrolls, especially now that Microsoft owns the IP and has shown a commitment to maximizing the value of its franchises.
