Xbox Expands Disc-to-Digital Program with New Major Publisher Addition
Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature is currently in the testing phase, exclusively available to members of the Insiders program. This allows the team to gather feedback and implement updates, ensuring the feature is polished before its public launch. It also provides publishers additional time to consider joining the digitization initiative. Recently, a series of enhancements has sparked excitement among fans regarding the program’s progress.
The disc-to-digital program has been accessible to Xbox Insiders since August 31. Its launch wasn’t unexpected, as a roadmap detailing the feature had been leaked shortly beforehand. This program enables players to obtain a digital license for games they already own physically, granting them easy access to these titles as long as the license is linked to their account.
Since its introduction, Insiders have been exploring the program, sharing insights with the community and providing feedback to Xbox for ongoing improvements. One of the standout features of disc-to-digital is its inclusion of delisted games that previously lacked digital licenses. However, some titles that players anticipated would be easily digitized, due to their availability on digital platforms, couldn’t be claimed because their publishers opted out of the program.
Notably, some major companies initially declined to participate in the disc-to-digital initiative. Ubisoft was among the most prominent, but it has since reversed its decision. Sega took a bit longer to join, but as of September 28, it has come on board, allowing fans to digitize classic titles like Sonic and Persona. Securing participation from as many publishers as possible should be a key focus for Xbox, as this would enable players to digitize a broader range of their physical collections.
In addition to this, Xbox is rolling out updates to enhance the feature’s accessibility and ease of use. Previously, players needed to insert the game into the console and navigate to the Settings menu to claim a license. Now, this process is automated as soon as the disc is inserted. The first time a player uses disc-to-digital, an on-screen guide will explain how the program operates, followed by a simple, non-intrusive notification for future uses.
While this hidden feature may only be beneficial in certain scenarios, it’s still a cool addition that enhances the overall experience.
