Game of Thrones to Make a Comeback in 2029 with Its First Feature Film
HBO’s iconic Game of Thrones universe is making its way to the big screen. Warner Bros. has revealed that the first feature film, titled Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, is set to premiere in theaters in spring 2029.
At the helm is director Owen Harris, known for his work on the HBO series. He directed three episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: “The Hedge Knight,” “Hard Salt Beef,” and the thrilling “In the Name of the Mother,” which showcased the intense Trial of Seven. The screenplay for Aegon’s Conquest is penned by Beau Willimon, who is recognized for creating and writing Netflix’s House of Cards and contributing to six episodes of Star Wars’ Andor, including the acclaimed jailbreak episode “One Way Out.”
The film will center on Aegon I, the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and the founder of the Targaryen dynasty. Known as Aegon the Conqueror, he united Westeros with the help of his dragons: Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar. The story of Aegon’s Conquest unfolds approximately 100 years before House of the Dragon and 300 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones.
Details regarding casting and production have yet to be revealed.
Mark your calendars for June 1, 2029, when Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest hits theaters. Meanwhile, the franchise will continue on television with the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms set to release in 2027, and the fourth and final season of House of the Dragon expected in 2028.
