Amazon’s Spider-Noir series will explore a divisive Spider-Man storyline.

Despite receiving favorable reviews, the Nic Cage-led Spider-Noir series on Prime Video was recently canceled by Amazon MGM. However, reports indicated that Amazon and Sony, which holds the rights to Spider-Man characters, were still brainstorming and developing new Spider-themed projects. Now, we have insight into what’s coming next.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Amazon MGM is nearing an order for a new series based on the “Clone Saga,” a storyline that shook up Spider-Man lore in the 1990s. The character Ben Reilly, who first appeared as a minor character in the 1970s, was reintroduced in the ’90s. In a controversial twist, it was revealed that Ben was the original and Peter Parker was the clone, although Marvel quickly reversed this decision. The “Clone Saga” also introduced Kaine Parker, a flawed clone who served as an antagonist. Both Ben and Kaine are set to be the main characters in the upcoming series.

Sources provided conflicting information about the show’s plot. Some suggested it would focus on Ben and Kaine grappling with their identities as clones while dealing with other clones. Others hinted that their origins might be reimagined, potentially giving them new names.

Regardless of how the series interprets the “Clone Saga,” significant changes from the original material are likely. It was noted that Spider-Noir had to change the character’s name from Peter Parker to Ben Reilly due to “rights carveouts,” suggesting that the original Spider-Man, Peter Parker, might not be available for this new series.

Kelvin Yu, known for creating American Born Chinese, is writing the series, with Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller expected to serve as executive producers alongside Yu. Fans of the franchise will recognize Lord and Miller as the producers behind the animated Spider-Verse films, with the third installment, Beyond the Spider-Verse, set to release on June 18, 2027.

It seems that even with a staggering $2.4 billion, Sony is still looking to expand its Spider-Man universe.
