Grand Theft Auto 6 to Feature 170+ Animal Species and Dynamic Hurricanes with Realistic Water Effects
New insights about the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 have emerged from a recent preview. Rockstar Games has revealed that the game will feature a groundbreaking weather system that simulates wind and rain with unprecedented realism. Players can expect a vibrant rendition of Florida, complete with wildlife and the potential for hurricanes and tropical storms.
The preview highlights a comprehensive 14-page look at GTA 6, revealing both familiar and fresh details. While many aspects had already been hinted at through leaks and trailers, the confirmation that Rockstar’s Miami will experience severe weather events is particularly thrilling.
Owen Shepard, the vice president of art for lighting and rendering at Rockstar, described the immersive weather effects: “Heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics, and a lot of rain combine so that everything is dripping wet, water is gushing off roof edges and lampposts, thunder rumbles, and flashes of lightning light up the clouds dramatically.”
But it’s not just the major storms that are getting the spotlight; even subtle elements like summer breezes and wind patterns around buildings will be intricately modeled. Shepard noted, “[Expect] offshore breezes after sunset, convectional updrafts, and occlusion from buildings. Hair and debris will swirl around on rooftops; gusts of wind will blow ripples over the water surface and bend the grass in swamps.”
The revamped weather system aims to create a more localized and persistent experience, enhancing the game’s sense of scale. Players will encounter dynamic cloudscapes that shift across the map, showcasing a range of weather from clear winter skies to dramatic summer storms.
In addition to the weather, the game will feature a rich array of wildlife. The preview mentions over 170 animal species populating the expansive map, the largest in GTA history. This includes more than 60 bird species and over 30 land mammals, alongside various sharks, reptiles, and fish. The attention to detail extends to non-native species like monkeys and armadillos, which can also be found in Florida.
Players will have the opportunity to interact with many of these animals, with features like feathers and bioluminescence rendered with precision. Fur will respond to interactions, and the game will simulate environmental effects like dirt clumping and variations in color and coat.
For those on the hunt for rare wildlife, Rockstar has confirmed that the animal rarity system from Red Dead Redemption 2 will return, along with Legendary creatures that will be elusive. While the specifics of these rare animals remain under wraps, the excitement builds as players look forward to exploring the swamps of Leonida when GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PS5, Xbox, and PC.
