Google’s Guided Vision Feature Aims to Enhance Fine Print Reading

Guided Vision is now live on compatible Android devices through Gemini, utilizing AI to provide real-time audio descriptions of whatever you point your phone’s camera at. By sharing your camera in Gemini Live, you can leverage Google’s AI to assist with tasks like reading small text, describing your environment, identifying objects, and detailing specific items.

Similar to the VoiceOver Live Recognition feature introduced by Apple for the iPhone and Vision Pro, this tool is aimed at individuals who are blind, have low vision, or need help in particular situations. Besides the Gemini app, Guided Vision is also integrated into Google TalkBack, and users can create an accessibility shortcut for it in the Settings app on devices running Android 9 and later, following its announcement in a recent Pixel update.

You can even ask follow-up questions about what you’re viewing, such as requesting Gemini to read the expiration date on an item it helped you locate. Google mentions that Gemini will provide audio cues to assist in aligning your camera if you inquire about something not currently in view. However, it’s important to note that Google advises against relying on Guided Vision for navigation, safe travel guidance, or obstacle detection, and it should not be used as a substitute for a cane or mobility aid.
